Mainland Chinese ground forces conducted live-fire drills targeting simulated key infrastructure in the East China Sea on Wednesday, as part of the PLA’s continuing military exercises near Taiwan.
The precision strike exercise focused on mock ports and energy facilities and “achieved its intended objectives”, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesman for the People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theatre Command, told state broadcaster CCTV on Wednesday.
The long-range firepower drills marked a new phase in the joint operations launched on Tuesday which have included land, sea, air and rocket forces in the Taiwan Strait and on the island’s eastern side.
The drills around Taiwan Island are a serious warning and an act of containment against "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, and a legitimate and necessary move to defend national sovereignty and uphold national unity, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday.

In response to a relevant query, spokesperson Guo Jiakun told a daily press briefing that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the Chinese territory and the Taiwan question is purely China's internal affairs that brook no external interference.
Taiwan's armed forces have detected 76 aircraft and 15 vessels of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) approaching the island over the past 24 hours, the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense reported.
