Putin agreed on Tuesday to a proposal by Trump for Russia and Ukraine to stop hitting each other's energy infrastructure for 30 days and gave a corresponding order to the Russian military, the Kremlin said.
The call, the second between the two leaders since Trump took office in January, appears to have lasted around two hours. And it comes one week after U.S. and Ukrainian officials first agreed to a proposal for a month-long ceasefire during a meeting in Saudi Arabia.
Presidents Vladimir Putin of Russia and Donald Trump of the United States have reiterated their commitment to continuing efforts toward settling the Ukrainian conflict, the Kremlin press service said.
"The leaders reiterated their intention to continue efforts toward settling the Ukrainian crisis in the bilateral regime, including taking into account the US president’s proposals," it said, adding that for these ends "Russian and American expert groups will be set up."
As well as a limited ceasefire on energy and infrastructure, the leaders agreed that steps towards peace must include "technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace," the White House said in a statement about the call.
"These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East," it said.
