Germans go to the polls under shadow of far-right surge

Polling is under way in Germany in one of the most divisive elections in recent memory, coming amid ongoing gloom about the economy and a polarizing debate on immigration.

The conservative Christian Democrats is expected to take around 30% of the vote, with the outgoing Social Democrats facing their worst performance in generations.

The far right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is expected to come second with around 20% of the vote, the strongest showing by an extreme right party since World War II.

Opinion polls have shown that German voters are increasingly anxious about the problems the country is facing.

  1. Polling stations have opened across Germany in early elections to the country’s Bundestag (parliament).

Overall, 4,506 candidates, with almost a third of them women, are vying for 630 seats in the Bundestag. About 59.2 million Germans eligible to vote will shape the new German parliament. Following the elections and the distribution of seats, a new German government will be formed along with the country’s new chancellor.

A total of 29 political parties are taking part in the parliamentary elections. However, only the conservative bloc of the Cristian Democratic and Christian Social Unions (CDU/CSU), the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), the Greens, the Alternative for Germany Party (AfD), the Left Party, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance - Reason and Justice (BSW) have real chances to get into the parliament.
