Attack against CPC to provoke high prices in global markets — Putin

The attack against the Caspian Pipeline Consortium will provoke steadily high prices in international markets that are of no interest for consumers, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"Why do they need it? It is not clear because this will lead to steadily high energy prices in global markets, in which consumers of energy resources, such as European companies, are certainly not interested," Putin said.

The attack against the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) looks like steps coordinated with European countries, Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters.

"If looking purely formally, it looks like some coordination actions. However, I do not want to believe in that. I think this is incidental. Europeans are merely [going] their own way and do not pay attention to what is taking place, the Russian leader said. "Nevertheless, formally, if we look at developments, it seems like some coordination," he added.

CPC had no Russian air defense systems because it is an international facility, Putin said.

  1. The Western equipment was damaged at the pump station of the Caspian Oil Consortium and it cannot be restored quickly, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"Regrettably, it cannot be quickly restored, this facility. And it is impossible to restore it in view of the Western equipment largely present there. The Western equipment was actually affected," Putin said.

  2. Russia receives a small amount of money for oil transit over the Caspian Pipeline Consortium pipeline, President Vladimir Putin said.

"Shareholders of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium are the US companies; Chevron, it seems to me, and European, including Eni, and Russian ones also, Lukoil. We actually received a very small amount of money for this transit, ‘five kopecks,’ figuratively speaking," Putin said.

Oil transported over CPC is produced in Kazakhstan within the framework of the production sharing agreement and actually belongs to US and European companies producing it, the president said. "We simply provide the service for our Kazakh friends and partners working in Kazakhstan," he added.
