Syrian army units have withdrawn from the city center of Damascus amid the advance of militants from terrorist groups, the Al Jazeera TV channel reports.
According to it, the militants seized control of several government facilities in the city center, including the Syrian state television building.
Earlier, Al Jazeera reported that militants had entered Damascus, while Al Hadath TV claimed that the Syrian capital had fallen under the control of militant groups.
Syrian President Bashar Assad has left Damascus amid ongoing developments in the country, where militants from terrorist groups have launched a major offensive against government forces, Reuters reported, citing two Syrian army officers.
According to the official, his plane departed for an unknown destination.
Syria’s army command has notified officers that President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year authoritarian rule has ended, a Syrian officer who was informed of the move told reporters, following a rapid rebel offensive that took the world by surprise.

Syrian President Bashar Assad may lose his power as early as next week, according to some US officials, CNN reported.

The Administration of Political Affairs, an arm of the Syrian opposition, reiterates its pledge to work for all Syrians.
