Syria's new rebel-led authorities say 14 interior ministry personnel have been killed and 10 injured in an "ambush" by forces loyal to ousted President Bashar al-Assad in the west of the country.
They say the fighting took place near the Mediterranean port of Tartous on Tuesday.
Reports say the security forces were ambushed as they tried to arrest a former officer in connection to his role at the notorious Saydnaya prison, close to the capital Damascus.
Just over two weeks ago, Assad's presidency fell to rebel forces led by the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) faction.
Previously, nine law enforcement officers were killed by gunfire during an operation to detain a high-ranking former officer of the previous government in Tartus.
Members of the country’s Alawite religious minority took to the streets on Wednesday in Tartus, Latakia and its suburb of Jableh, and also in Homs. The violent protest was accompanied by attacks on police officers. In response, the authorities imposed a curfew in these areas and accused supporters of former president Bashar Assad of attempts to destabilize the country and incite civil unrest.

The clashes in Tartus province - a stronghold of Mr Assad's Alawite minority - erupted after "a number of residents refused to allow their houses to be searched", said the Britain-based Observatory, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria.
ReplyDeleteThe officer's brother and armed men intercepted the security forces, "set up an ambush for them near the village and targeted one of the patrol vehicles", the Observatory said.
It added that "dozens of people" were arrested in the village.

At least nine people were killed by gunfire that erupted when security forces of Syria’s transitional government carried out a special operation in the city of Tartus some 220 km away from Damascus, the Al Hadath television reported.

A Syria war monitor said nine people were killed Wednesday in clashes in Tartus province after security forces sought to arrest an officer under deposed leader Bashar al-Assad who was linked to a notorious prison.
