Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris to reopenon Saturday five years after devastating fire

After five years of intense reconstruction efforts, a grand reopening ceremony will be held on Saturday to mark the return of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral before its doors open to the public once again on Sunday.

 The historic event comes after a devastating fire damaged the UNESCO world heritage site. Follow our liveblog to see how the day's events unfold. 

Five years ago, on April 15, 2019, Notre-Dame burst into flames. A colossal reconstruction effort was require to rebuild it. 

On Saturday, an opening ceremony is scheduled to begin around 7pm local time with a brief speech by French President Emmanuel Macron. 

The first mass in the restored cathedral will be held on Sunday at 10:30am local time.
