Ceasefire in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah begins does not envisage US military presence

A ceasefire between Israel and Iran-backed group Hezbollah took effect at 4am local time  after US President Joe Biden said both sides accepted an agreement brokered by the United States and France.

Bursts of gunfire could be heard across Beirut after the ceasefire took effect. It was not immediately clear if the shooting was celebratory, as gunfire had also been used to alert residents who may have missed evacuation warnings issued by Israel's military.

Warplanes of the Israeli air force attacked the southern outskirts of the Lebanese capital at night, shortly before the ceasefire was expected to enter force.

The ceasefire deal between the Israeli government and Lebanon’s Shia organization Hezbollah does not envisage US military presence in Lebanon’s southern regions, US President Joe Biden said.

"There will be no US troops deployed in southern Lebanon. This is consistent with my commitment to the American people to not put US troops in combat in this conflict. Instead, we, along with France and others, will provide the necessary assistance to make sure this deal is implemented fully and effectively," he told reporters in the White House Rose Garden.
