The strikes came after President Joe Biden’s administration pledged to respond to attacks on US personnel that Washington has blamed on armed groups backed by Iran.
"Today [on October 26], at President Biden’s direction, US military forces conducted self-defense strikes on two facilities in eastern Syria used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated groups," Austin said in a statement, published by the Pentagon’s press service.
The United States’ overnight strikes on Syria hit a weapons storage facility and an ammunition storage facility used by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran-back groups, senior US officials have told the Reuters news agency.
ReplyDeleteIt was unclear if Iranian nationals were killed in the strikes, Reuters cited the officials as saying.
Two F-16 fighter jets using precision munitions carried out the strikes at roughly 4:30am local time [01:30 GMT] near Abu Kamal, close to the border with Iraq, according to the officials.
