Strong earthquake hits Iraq and Iran, killing at least 168
At least 168 people were killed in Iraq and Iran on Sunday when a powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit the region, state media in the two countries said, as rescuers searched for dozens trapped under rubble.


At least 164 people were killed in Iran, Behnam Saeedi, a spokesman for Iran’s National Disaster Management Organization, said on the state television. More than 1,650 were injured, he said.

Officials expected the casualty toll to rise when search and rescue teams reached remote areas of Iran.

  1. A powerful magnitude-7.3 earthquake rocked last night the western areas in Iran, killing more than 328 people and injuring thousands.

    Spokesman for Iran’s National Disaster Management Organization Behnam Saidi said “The number of victims to the west of the country reached 328 while 2530 were injured.”

    Local officials said the death toll would rise as search and rescue teams reached remote areas.

  2. The head of the Relief and Rescue Organization of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) said eight cities and 526 villages in the western province of Kermanshah have been damaged in Sunday’s 7.3-magnitude earthquake that killed at least 348 people and injured thousands.

    Morteza Salimi said on Monday that eight cities, including Kermanshah, Qasr-e-Shirin, Salas-e Babajani, Gilan-e-Gharb, Sarpol-e Zahab, Dalahu, Eslamabad-e Gharb and Javanrud have been damaged by the quake.

    About 138,000 people were living within a 50 km radius of the earthquake's epicenter, he said, adding that 33,379 households have been affected by the temblor.

    Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, Governor of Dalahu County Moradali Tatar said following the massive earthquake on Sunday night, some villages of the county have been 100 percent destroyed.
