The governor of Homs said five people were killed and seven wounded and the airbase has been almost completely destroyed.


He also said there were a number of casualties among civilians in a village near the air base.

Talal Barazi said the attack served the interests of "armed terrorist groups" including the so-called Islamic State, adding that the air base had been providing air support for Syrian army operations against IS east of Palmyra.

In a sharp escalation of the US military role in Syria, two US warships fired dozens of cruise missiles from the eastern Mediterranean Sea at the airbase controlled by President Bashar al-Assad's forces in response to the attack in a rebel-held area on Tuesday, US officials said.
