Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed willingness to support the establishment of 'safe zones' for refugees in Syria should such a plan include close cooperation with the UN and the Syrian authorities.
“If this is about the people who were forced to leave their homes by the conflict, […] getting their basic needs covered, […] then I think that the idea to create areas within Syria for those internally displaced could be discussed with the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees and other organizations,” he said.
The proposal would require negotiations with the Syrian government to reach common ground on the principles of creating those zones on Syrian territory, Lavrov insisted.
