Gambia's Inauguration Day: incumbent president won't leave. The midnight deadline passed with no action.

Troops in Senegal await an order to enter neighboring Gambia to enforce a transfer of power, as Gambia's outgoing president refuses to step down.


Incumbent President Yahya Jammeh said he will not accept his loss in December's elections and instead seeks to have the results annulled, citing errors in the process. A message from the new president, Adama Barrow, said his inauguration will occur on schedule Thursday, but at the Gambian embassy in Dakar, Senegal.

The tiny West African nation, popular with European tourists, saw an exodus of visitors this week as the threat of violence grew. About 26,000 Gambians sought refuge in Senegal, and a multinational military force of several West African countries is prepared to enter Gambia to keep order and to facilitate Barrow's inauguration.

"All the troops are already on site. If no solution has been reached by midnight, we will take action." Col. Seydou Maiga Moro of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) told Senegal's state media on Wednesday. The midnight deadline passed with no action.
