A 7.7 magnitude earth quake struck of the Chilean coast Sunday prompting a tsunami warning for some coasts.
The US Geological Survey said the quake struck near the southern coast of the quake-prone South American nation at 1422 GMT at a depth of 15 kilometers (9 miles).
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said that "hazardous" waves up to three meters (yards) above tide level were possible for some areas of the Chilean coastline.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of the town of Puerto Quellon.
The closest population center was Castro, a town on the island of 40,000 inhabitants. Chile's capital Santiago was around 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) from the epicenter.
Chilean officials called for coastal areas nearby to be evacuated.
Chile is in a quake-prone region, lying on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire of frequent seismic activity.
