A local court in Kayseri has ruled for a TL 251,000 ($86,000) fine in damages from Israel for injuring an activist during the raid of a Gaza-bound flotilla by Israeli soldiers.
The Doğan news agency reported on Friday that the Kayseri 8th Court of First Instance ruled for the payment in damages to Ahmet Aydan Bekar, who was injured during the deadly raid of the Mavi Marmara flotilla in 2010. The raid left eight Turks and one Turkish-American dead and dealt a blow to Turkish-Israeli relations.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Bekar's lawyer, Ersin Umman, said the decision of the Kayseri court will set a precedent for other lawsuits filed throughout Turkey against the Israeli soldiers involved in the incident. One of the lawsuits involves four Israeli commanders who are being tried at the İstanbul 7th High Criminal Court, according to Umman.
A UN report released in September 2011 regarding the Israeli raid on the Mavi Marmara ship found it to be “excessive and unreasonable.” The 105-page report called the killings “unacceptable.”
