Turkey: HDP asks for autonomy, as PM cancels meeting on constitution dialogue

The People’s Democratic Party (HDP) has insisted on self-rule in southeastern Anatolia as Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu canceled a meeting with the party over the constitution, accusing the HDP of violence.

A meeting of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK) called for the establishment of “democratic autonomous regions” for the solution of the Kurdish problem. The DTK had convened to discuss operations in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır and asked for “self-governance” in a statement on Dec. 27.

The group called for dialogue and negotiations and therefore sought the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan, the jailed leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The DTK also embraced “legitimate insurgency” and called on the people of Turkey to give support them.

People’s assemblies in the southeastern towns of Silopi, Cizre and Nusaybin as well as in the province of Şırnak have declared “self-governance” following clashes between PKK and the security forces........http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/hdp-asks-for-autonomy-as-pm-cancels-meeting-on-constitution-dialogue.aspx?pageID=238&nID=93079&NewsCatID=338

The Democratic People's Congress (DTK), made up of Kurdish non-governmental organizations, made the call after a two-day meeting in Diyarbakir.

"The rightful resistance mounted by our people against the policies that degrade the Kurdish problem, is essentially a demand and struggle for local self-governance and local democracy," said the final resolution of the meeting, titled "declaration of political resolution regarding self-rule".

The declaration called for the formation of autonomous regions including several neighboring provinces of Diyarbakir to take account of cultural, economic and geographic affinities.

The call could escalate tensions between Kurds and the Turkish government as the government adamantly opposes a separate Kurdish state.....reuters.com

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who is a strong advocate of a switch to presidential system in his country, has said implementation of a presidential system while keeping the unitary structure of the state is possible, reportedly showing Hitler’s Germany as an example.

Speaking at a press conference following his return to the country after cutting short his trip due to death of pro-government journalist Hasan Karakaya, Erdoğan was asked whether a presidential system can be adopted while keeping the country’s unitary structure. “When we look [at other countries], we see that it is possible. You would see this when you look at Hitler’s Germany and other countries,” he was quoted as saying by T24 news portal.
