The Prime Ministry announced on Saturday that a planned meeting between Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and leaders of the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) has been canceled, saying recent statements by party officials have left no room for dialogue.
Davutoğlu was scheduled to meet with HDP officials on Dec. 30, as part of a round of talks with all opposition parties represented in Parliament to discuss a planned new constitution as well as the issues of reform and budget.
In a statement, the Prime Ministry condemned remarks made by HDP leaders over the past week which it said promoted polarization and clashes.
"HDP leaders have shown once again that they lack the political maturity required to use politics as a means to solve problems. There is no point in sitting around the same table with [those who subscribe to] such an ill-mannered approach," the statement said, without specifying the HDP statements in question.
Davutoğlu has accused HDP Co-Chairman Selahattin Demirtaş of "treason" after Demirtaş met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Wednesday and reiterated that the downing of a Russian jet by Turkish F-16s near the Syrian border on Nov. 24 was wrong.
Davutoğlu was due to meet with the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) on Dec. 30 and the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) on Jan. 4.
The cancellation of the planned talks comes as security forces carry out a massive operation against militants linked to the youth wing of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorist group in several predominantly Kurdish districts in the southeastern Anatolia.
The Prime Ministry statement said Davutoğlu's initial request to HDP for talks had never been aimed at starting a debate on the determined fight against terrorism, saying that fight was not "open to bargaining."
