The Syrian army foiled an Islamic State (IS) on an airbase in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour, state news agency SANA reported Thursday.
Government forces guarding the Deir al-Zour airbase fired rockets on explosive-laden tanks operated by IS militants, destroying them before they reached the gates of the base, SANA said.
Many IS militants were killed in their latest attempt to breach the airbase, SANA said without specifying when that happened.
The IS now controls large swathes of the oil-rich province near Iraq.
The latest infiltration attempt came less than a week after Syrian forces killed 59 IS militants in separate attacks around the province.
Syria has been gripped by conflicts since March 2011. Over 250,000 people have reportedly been killed and millions displaced due to the violence.
