US May Take Actions at UN if Russia Facilitates Iranian Arms Transfer

The United States will take actions against Russia if reports that Moscow allegedly helped to transfer Iranian weapons to Syria are true, US State Department spokesman John Kirby said in a press conference on Thursday.

“We will be looking into these press reports, and if Russia is found to be facilitating those transfers, we are going to raise that in the appropriate channels, both bilaterally and at the UN if warranted,” Kirby stated.

  • On Thursday, Fox News reported that Russia helped deliver Iranian weapons to Syria “twice a day over the past 10 days.” The media outlet attributed the information to Western intelligence sources.

The export of Iranian weapons is banned under UN Security Council resolution 1747.

The United States has also imposed sanctions on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Ministry of Intelligence and Security for providing material assistance to the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad.

  1. The use of force without securing approval of Damascus is unacceptable, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said on Friday in reply to the question about the possibility of a US ground operation...

"The issue of the use of force in any shape or form without consent of Damascus is unacceptable for us," the diplomat said.

"This situation has continued for a long time, and it is one of the topics on which we fundamentally disagree with the United States," he added, noting that instead of complicating the situation further, the US should jointly with Russia look for ways for a Syrian settlement.
