Crisis in Syria can be settled by ensuring political transitional period (Fabius)

The conflict in Syria can be settled only by ensuring a political transitional period, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Friday after talks in Paris with his colleagues from Germany and Great Britain, as well as High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini. 


"A few days prior to the start of a ‘ministerial week’ at the UN General Assembly, we discussed in Paris the Syrian crisis and its influence on the European Union, which has found itself in a situation of an unprecedented refugee inflow," Fabius said.

He said that "only ensuring in Syria of a political transitional period, which will involve certain representatives of the current Syrian administration, as well as representatives of moderate opposition - as it was envisioned in documents approved in Geneva - will make it possible to stop the Syrian conflict."

• At the same time, the French minister said again that Syrian President Bashar Assad "can’t be considered a figure with whom Syria’s future is connected."

Speaking of the refugee problem, Fabius said that the meeting in particular stressed the necessity to "ensure security of Syria’s civilian population."

The talks' participants also discussed issues connected with the necessity to boost efforts "aimed at normalization of the situation in Libya," the French Foreign Ministry said.

According to UN statistics, fighting between Syrian government troops and militants has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced millions since its start in 2011.

An international peace conference on Syria, dubbed Geneva-2, organized by Russia and the United States and designed to negotiate a solution to the Syrian crisis, held in January and February 2014, brought no particular progress.
