Saudi Arabia's military build-up near its southern border with Yemen is purely defensive, two Saudi sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
"We are protecting our borders only," said one of the sources when asked if the kingdom planed to intervene in Yemen.
"Tanks have been moved to the border but this is only to defend the country," said the second Saudi source.
The buildup follows a southward advance by Iranian-backed Houthi Shi'ite militants who took control of the capital Sanaa in September and moved closer on Wednesday to Aden, the base of Saudi-supported President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Reuters

A Yemeni army brigade linked to Shiite rebels seized Aden's airport Wednesday as anti-government fighters advanced on the southern city where President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi has taken refuge, witnesses said.
They said soldiers of the 39th Armoured Brigade posted near the airport had taken control of the facility, after switching their allegiance to the rebels.
Rebels television channel Al-Massira said the army unit had "secured the airport".
Clashes later erupted near the airport between units of the brigade and armed men, witnesses said.
Paramilitary forces allied with Hadi, known as Popular Committees, had earlier withdrawn from the airport, which suspended its operations Wednesday.
