Egypt providing military support for Gulf Arab operation in Yemen (UPDATED). Egyptian Warships en Route to Gulf of Aden...

Egypt is providing political and military support for an operation launched by Saudi Arabia and its Gulf Arab allies against Houthi fighters in Yemen, the state news agency said on Thursday.
It quoted the foreign ministry as saying coordination was under way with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Arab countries over preparations in taking part with an Egyptian air, naval and ground force if necessary.

The announcement by Egypt "stems from its historic responsibility towards the national Arab security" and "in defense of Yemen's security and stability," the foreign ministry said.

Gulf broadcaster al-Arabiya TV reported that the kingdom was contributing as many as 150,000 troops and 100 warplanes to the operations and that Egypt, Jordan, Sudan and Pakistan were ready to take part in a ground offensive in Yemen.

Unidentified warplanes had earlier launched air strikes on the main airport in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, and its al Dulaimi military airbase, residents said.

That came soon after Saudi Arabia's ambassador in Washington, Adel al-Jubeir, announced the operation......................http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/126112.aspx

  4. World powers divided over Saudi military strikes in Yemen...

In an echo of Cold War faultlines, world powers took sharply contrasting views on Thursday over Saudi Arabian military operations against Houthi positions in Yemen.

The U.K. joined Turkey, Egypt and France on Thursday in publicly declaring its support for Saudi Arabia's anti-Houthi military operations and airstrikes in Yemen that started late Wednesday. Russia, Iran, Syria and Iraq, meanwhile, have labeled them as “aggression.”

    - Global support

“We support the Saudi Arabian military intervention in Yemen following President Hadi’s request for support by ‘all means and measures to protect Yemen and deter Houthi aggression,’” a U.K. foreign office spokesperson said.

The spokesperson denounced, “recent Houthi actions and expansion in Aden and Taiz,” saying they signified the Houthis' “disregard for the political process.”

Stressing that the UN Security Council has made clear that Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi is Yemen’s legitimate president, the spokesperson said: “the solution to the crisis must be a political one.”.............http://www.aa.com.tr/en/news/484337--world-powers-divided-over-saudi-military-strikes-in-yemen

  5. Egyptian security and military officials say Saudi Arabia and Egypt will lead a ground operation in Yemen against Shiite rebels and their allies after a campaign of airstrikes to weaken them...

Three senior officials tell The Associated Press that forces would enter by land from Saudi Arabia and by sea from the Red Sea and Arabian Sea. They said Thursday that other nations will also be involved.

They would not specify troop numbers or say when the operation would start, only that it would be after airstrikes weaken the rebels and allied forces loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

They say the offensive aims to push the rebels into negotiations on power sharing. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.
