The International Criminal Court has launched an inquiry into possible
war crimes in the Palestinian territories, opening a path to possible
charges against Israelis or Palestinians.
In a statement on Friday, prosecutors said they would examine "in full independence and impartiality" crimes that may have occurred since June 13 last year. This allows the court to delve into the war between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza in July-August 2014.
The US State Department said it strongly disagreed with the move. The United States has argued that Palestine is not a state and therefore not eligible to join the ICC.
"We strongly disagree with the ICC prosecutor's action," spokesman Jeff Rathke said in a statement late on Friday. "The place to resolve the differences between the parties is through direct negotiation, not unilateral actions by either side."

U.S. slams ICC’s Gaza probe as ‘tragic irony’ ...
ReplyDeleteThe United States on Friday condemned as “tragic irony” the International Criminal Court’s decision to open a preliminary probe into possible war crimes committed by Israeli forces against Palestinians.
“We strongly disagree with the ICC prosecutor’s action today,” State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke said in a statement.
“It is a tragic irony that Israel, which has withstood thousands of terrorist rockets fired at its civilians and its neighborhoods, is now being scrutinized by the ICC,” he added.

"We strongly disagree with the ICC Prosecutor's action today. As we have said repeatedly, we do not believe that Palestine is a state and therefore we do not believe that it is eligible to join the ICC. It is a tragic irony that Israel, which has withstood thousands of terrorist rockets fired at its civilians and its neighborhoods, is now being scrutinized by the ICC. The place to resolve the differences between the parties is through direct negotiations, not unilateral actions by either side. We will continue to oppose actions against Israel at the ICC as counterproductive to the cause of peace."

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird reaffirmed Canada's opposition Monday to a Palestinian attempt to pursue war crimes charges against Israel at the International Criminal Court...
ReplyDeleteSpeaking in Jerusalem, Baird said the Palestinians "made a huge mistake" by going to the ICC, an United Nations institution that Canada played a lead role in creating in the 1990s.
Baird met Monday with Israeli officials as part of his five-day visit to the region. Prior to meeting Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon, he said the Palestinians crossed a "red line" and that he "communicated that in no uncertain terms" to Palestinian leaders a day earlier..............http://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/baird-says-palestinians-made-mistake-pursuing-israel-at-icc-1.2194921#ixzz3PISkNI9M
