The crew left the ship in rough seas in the Mediterranean off Italy's south coast, in the second such incident in three days. Three coastguards managed to take control of the vessel, the Sierra Leone-flagged Ezadeen, after landing on it by helicopter.
They will take it to an Italian port.
The cargo ship had been drifting powerless in rough seas about 40 nautical miles from Italy's southern coast with as many as 450 people on board.
- "We know that it left from a Turkish port and was abandoned by its crew," coastguard spokesman Filippo Marini said in an interview with SkyTG24 television.

ReplyDeleteA dramatic, hours-long rescue mission in choppy waters ended Friday morning, when the Italian navy took control of the 73-metre-long (240-foot-long) Sierra Leone-registered Ezadeen, which had been abandoned by its crew off the southwestern coast of Italy.
Six coast guard officers were lowered from a helicopter onto the deck of the vessel, according to an Italian naval official.
FRANCE 24 has learned that the Ezadeen was towed to the Italian port of Crotone.
Earlier Friday, the AP reported that an Icelandic coast guard ship, part of a new European patrol force to aid migrants at sea, was responsible for towing the cargo vessel to Italy.

Mit „Geisterschiffen“ im Mittelmeer, die ohne Besatzung und vollgepfercht mit Flüchtlingen ihrem Schicksal überlassen werden, zeigen Schleuserbanden nach Ansicht der EU-Grenzschutzagentur Frontex „einen neuen Grad der Grausamkeit“. „Das ist eine neue Erscheinung dieses Winters“, sagte Frontex-Pressesprecherin Ewa Moncure am Freitag in Warschau.

A total of 796 migrants were rescued from another ship found abandoned without any crew earlier in the week.
