Washington has seen the text of a draft resolution circulating in the UN Security Council and "it is not something that we would support," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters.
"We think others feel the same and we are calling for further consultations. The Palestinians understand that."
She pointed to a statement from Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas that he would support further consultations, adding US Secretary of State John Kerry had been holding discussions with different parties on Thursday.
She agreed the problem was the content of a Jordanian text that would set a 12-month timeline for wrapping up peace negotiations and a late 2017 deadline for an Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian lands.
"We wouldn't support any action that would prejudge the outcome of the negotiations or would set a specific deadline for withdrawal of security forces," Psaki said, adding that the parties were aware of US concerns.
In the past, the US has supported UN resolutions relating to Israel. But Psaki stressed that "obviously the content is important."
"We've been clear about what our principles are, and the fact that we could support certain forms of resolution, but those discussions are private," Psaki added.

Senior officials from the Palestinian Authority admitted over the weekend that they were under heavy pressure not to request a vote on the Palestinian resolution presented last week to the United Nations Security Council.
Despite previous Palestinian announcements that they would request such a vote immediately - even if the move would fail because of the inability to enlist nine votes or owing to an American veto - it transpires that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is in no hurry to ask for such a vote, and it seems the matter will be postponed for a while, possibly for weeks.

ReplyDeletePA officials said that the consultations are aimed at paving the way for a vote on the draft resolution, which calls for an Israeli withdrawal to the pre-1967 lines and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital.
The officials said that until now they have not been able to secure the required nine votes of the Security Council permanent members. Report: India may drop UN support for Palestinians ...
ReplyDeleteFollowing a power change in India and improvement of its relations with Israel, the government of Narendra Modi is considering changing its UN voting policy regarding the Palestinian issue.
According to the popular newspaper The Hindu, the Indian government, which for many years has automatically voted pro-Palestinian, is weighing changing its policy to abstaining on votes regarding the Middle East peace process, which "could amount to a tectonic shift in the country's foreign policy," according to The Hindu.
The Indian paper quoted two Indian government officials who confirmed that a policy change is being explored.
“Like other foreign policy issues, the Modi government is looking at India’s voting record at the United Nations on the Palestinian issue,” a government source told The Hindu. The change only needs an administrative nod, the second source said.
