UNSC rejects Palestinian statehood bid (two votes against and five abstentions)

The U.N. Security Council on Tuesday rejected a draft resolution on Palestinian statehood after receiving only eight votes in favor.
Security Council member Jordan had requested the vote following a meeting of Arab ambassadors on the draft resolution that sets a 12-month deadline to reach a final peace deal with Israel.

"We have decided that we are going to pass to a vote at the Security Council on the resolution," Jordanian Ambassador Dina Kawar had told reporters.

The Palestinians on Monday presented changes to the text that was submitted on Dec. 17, toughening up language on East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state and demanding an end to Israeli settlements.

The resolution called for a full Israeli withdrawal from the Palestinian territories to be completed no later than the end of 2017.

The United States had rejected the measure, arguing that it binds the parties to a strict time frame to reach an agreement that has eluded the region for decades.

Washington reiterated its opposition on Tuesday and stressed it was not alone in rejecting the Palestinian draft.

"There are a number of countries that have indicated they cannot support this resolution," said U.S. State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke.

"Even among countries that are longstanding supporters of the Palestinians and that have indicated they would vote in favor of the resolution, many of them have also acknowledged that it is an unconstructive and poorly timed resolution."

  1. Israel blasts draft resolution, says Palestine avoiding direct talks ...

An advisor to Israel’s UN envoy has criticized a draft resolution on creating a Palestinian state and accused Palestine of avoiding direct talks with Israelis.

The document, which failed to pass the UN Security Council vote on Tuesday, is “absurd and represents only one side,” Israel Nitzan said.

“The Palestinians use any possibility to avoid direct talks with Israel,” the diplomat said. “They are engaged in a never-ending series of political games,” he said.

The diplomat said Palestine cannot become a state “through agitation and provocations.” He has urged the UN Security Council to “stop conniving the Palestinians.”

Riyad Mansour, a permanent observer of Palestine to the United Nations, said the Palestinian leadership is expected to define its further steps within a day, “taking into consideration the unstable and dangerous situation and also the need to act in a responsible way and within the people’s interests.”.................http://itar-tass.com/en/world/770099

  4. Hamas slams Abbas on plan to resubmit statehood bid: Stop this political foolishness ...

Hamas attacked Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday for his plans to bring another resolution to the UN Security Council to force Israel to withdraw to the pre-1967 lines.

The Palestinian's first such resolution failed to gain approval in a UN Security Council vote last week. Abbas announced on Sunday that the Palestinians would resume their statehood bid at the United Nations Security Council “despite pressure they are facing.”

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri responded on Monday that "Hamas is totally opposed to any return to the UN Security Council by the Palestinian Authority."...............http://www.jpost.com/Arab-Israeli-Conflict/Hamas-slams-Abbas-on-plan-to-resubmit-statehood-bid-Stop-this-political-foolishness-386732
