  1. Kim Jong Un says open to summit talks with South Korea ...

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said Thursday he is open to a summit meeting with South Korea, an unusual overture made amid his country’s heightened tensions with the United States, Seoul’s closest ally, over a damaging cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.

“If South Korean authorities have a position that they seriously want to improve North-South relations through dialogue, we believe we can resume suspended high-level contacts and sectoral meetings,” Kim said in a nationally televised New Year’s address.

Depending on the “atmosphere and environment,” he said, “there is no reason not to be able to hold the highest-level meeting” with South Korean President Park Geun Hye.

But for this to happen, he said that South Korea must stop carrying out its annual “large-scale war exercises” with the United States..................http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2015/01/01/asia-pacific/politics-diplomacy-asia-pacific/new-year-address-kim-jong-un-says-north-open-summit-talks-south-korea/#.VKV8VckYE9Q

(Reuters) - Ukrainian separatists carried out sporadic attacks on government forces as the New Year began, wounding three soldiers, the Kiev military said, as President Petro Poroshenko told the nation to brace for a year that would "not be easy".

The military said rebels had carried out several mortar and small arms attacks on Ukrainian positions in the east. Local authorities in Luhansk region, bordering Russia, said rebel mortar fire had destroyed two homes in a village on Thursday, killing one civilian.

There was no confirmation of these reports from the rebels.

A fire that has raged in the al-Sidra oil port in eastern Libya for one week has been put out, an official said, according to the Al Arabiya News Channel.

Al-Sider and its adjacent Ras Lanuf terminal have been closed since a group allied to a rival government in Tripoli moved three weeks ago to try and take them, part of a struggle between former rebels who helped topple Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 but are now fighting for power and a share of oil reserves.

India's defence ministry says a Pakistani fishing boat bound for India blew up, killing all four people on board, after the Indian coast guard tried to stop and search it.

Indian intelligence said the crew was planning "an illicit transaction" when the vessel was intercepted on New Year's Eve in the Arabian Sea, 365km off India's western coast, according to a government statement released on Friday.

  10. Turkish President Erdoğan’s former chief guards on trial for spying ...

An Ankara court conducted its first hearing on Jan. 2 in a case into the illegal wiretapping of former Prime Minister, now President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s offices, with some of the leader’s top guards accused of planting bugs to eavesdrop on Erdoğan.

One of Erdoğan’s bodyguards, Zeki Bulut, said he “devoted” himself to Erdoğan, but he is now accused of “betraying” the former prime minister.

The Ankara 7th Court of Serious Crimes has made Erdoğan, who was elected as president in August 2014, and the Prime Ministry parties to the case.

The court also rejected demands by the eight defendants present at the first hearing that they be discharged. There are 13 total suspects, but five police officers who are implicated in the case have yet to be apprehended.

Erdoğan’s security chief at the time, Mehmet Yüksel, said they had searched for possible bugs in every venue where the prime minister delivered speeches, but they realized during the investigation that regular searches were not conducted in Erdoğan’s residences.

They proposed to the Police Department that two searches a month should be conducted in both Erdoğan's house and his official residence, but carrying out bi-monthly searches proved difficult due to his busy schedule, Yüksel said.

“But I don’t think our colleagues were evil-minded,” he said..................http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkish-president-erdogans-former-chief-guards-on-trial-for-spying.aspx?pageID=238&nID=76443&NewsCatID=338

  11. France wants action on Libya, stops short of African calls for intervention ...

French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Friday world powers must tackle instability in Libya but he stopped short of openly backing the military intervention called for by regional powers in the Sahel.

Speaking shortly after meeting Le Drian in Niamey, Niger's president, Mahamadou Issoufou, reiterated calls for an international military intervention in Libya, a position supported by several other African leaders concerned about the impact of the country's lawlessness on the region.

The leaders of Mali and Senegal have called for action by the West in Libya to end to chaos they say stems from the 2011 intervention that helped oust Libya's longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.

While two rival governments compete for legitimacy in Tripoli, Libya's desert south has become a stronghold for armed groups, some with links to al Qaeda.

    1. Bushfires in South Australia 'destroy dozens of homes' ...

More than 30 homes are feared destroyed in South Australia as crews continue to battle out-of-control bushfires.

More than 800 firefighters are tackling the blazes, which have been burning for several days in the hills around the city of Adelaide.

Officials say the fires are the worst in the area since the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983, which left 75 dead.

Cooler weather may help firefighters tame the flames, which have been fanned by high winds and temperatures.

More than 30 homes are already feared destroyed in the hills behind the city of Adelaide.

More than 500 firefighters are tackling the fires, which have been burning since Friday.

Officials say the blaze is the worst in the area since the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983, which left 75 dead.

Temperatures are forecast to hit 34C in Adelaide on Monday before rising to as high as 38C on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Speaking to the BBC, Australia's Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said: "We are doing everything we possibly can but nature is powerful, fires are powerful and everyone must respond to that threat."...............http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-30677472

  52. 670,000 Syria children affected by IS school closures - UN ...

An estimated 670,000 children in Syria are being deprived of education after Islamic State forces ordered schools closed to change the curriculum, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said today.

Islamic State, an offshoot of al Qaeda which has recruited foreign fighters, has seized land in Syria and Iraq, imposing its strict reading of Islamic law.

In November it shut schools in areas it controls in eastern Syria pending a religious revision of the curriculum.. The group stands accused of massacres, sexually enslaving women and girls and recruiting children as fighters.

"In December there was a decree of the Islamic State ordering the stoppage of education in areas under its control," UNICEF spokesman Christophe Boulierac told a news briefing.

"Islamic State said that the curriculum needed to be reshaped or re-conceived."

Children enrolled in primary and secondary schools in Raqqa, and rural areas of Deir al-Zor and Aleppo provinces are affected by the closures, he said. Teachers must undergo retraining.

UNICEF also said that at least 160 children were killed and 343 wounded in attacks on schools across Syria last year. The toll was probably an under-estimate due to difficulties of access and obtaining data generally, Boulierac said.

"In addition to lack of school access, attacks on schools, teachers and students are further horrific reminders of the terrible price Syria's children are paying in a crisis approaching its fifth year," Hanaa Singer, UNICEF representative in Syria, said in a statement..........................http://www.buenosairesherald.com/article/178858/670000-syria-children-affected-by-is-school-closures--un

  73. China calls for restraint on Kashmir border ...

China is concerned about the recent flare-up between India and Pakistan on Kashmir border and urged for restraint from both sides, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Thursday.

As a neighbor and friend to both Pakistan and India, China hopes the two countries to control the situation through dialogue and consultation, and properly deal with their disputes, said Hong at a regular press briefing.

He called on the two countries to work together to safeguard peace, stability and development in South Asia.

The troops of India and Pakistan have been targeting each other on International Border (IB) and Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir since the beginning of the new year.

The troops of India and Pakistan intermittently exchange fire on 198 km IB and 720 km-long LoC in Kashmir, despite an agreement in 2003 to observe cease-fire.

Both New Delhi and Islamabad accused each other of resorting to unprovoked firings and violating cease-fire agreements, and both sides maintain their troops gave befitting reply to the other side.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk's obsession with the Russian Kremlin continues to grow stronger. According to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, it was Russian special services that attacked websites of German government agencies on January 7.

The hacker attacks on the websites of the German Chancellor, the government of Germany, the Bundestag and the Foreign Ministry of Germany were committed prior to Yatsenyuk's meeting with Angela Merkel in Berlin. An official representative for Berlin, Steffen Seibert, called the attacks "serious."

  99. “Free Speech” hypocrisy in the aftermath of the attack on Charlie Hebdo ...

The attack on the editorial offices of Charlie Hebdo has shocked the public, which is horrified by the violent deaths of 12 people in the center of Paris. The video images, viewed by millions, of the gunmen firing their weapons and killing an already-wounded policeman have imparted to Wednesday’s events an extraordinary actuality.

In the immediate aftermath of the shootings, the state and media are seeking to exploit the fear and the confusion of the public. Once again, the political bankruptcy and essentially reactionary character of terrorism is exposed. It serves the interests of the state, which utilizes the opportunity provided by the terrorists to whip up support for authoritarianism and militarism. In 2003, when the Bush administration invaded Iraq, French popular opposition was so overwhelming that the government led by President Jacques Chirac was compelled to oppose the war, even in the face of massive political pressure from the United States. Now, 12 years later, as President François Hollande is striving to transform France into the United States’ principal ally in the “war on terror,” the attack in Paris plays into his hands.

In these efforts Hollande can rely on the media, which in such circumstances directs all its energies toward the emotional manipulation and political disorientation of the public. The capitalist media, skillfully combining the suppression of information with half-truths and outright lies, devises a narrative that is calculated to appeal not only to the basest instincts of the broad public, but also to its democratic and idealistic sentiments.

Throughout Europe and the United States, the claim is being made that the attack on the magazine Charlie Hebdo was an assault on the freedom of the press and the unalienable right of journalists in a democratic society to express themselves without loss of freedom or fear for their lives. The killing of the Charlie Hebdo cartoonists and editors is being proclaimed an assault on the principles of free speech that are, supposedly, held so dear in Europe and the United States. The attack on Charlie Hebdo is, thus, presented as another outrage by Muslims who cannot tolerate Western “freedoms.” From this the conclusion must be drawn that the “war on terror”—i.e., the imperialist onslaught on the Middle East, Central Asia and North and Central Africa—is an unavoidable necessity.

In the midst of this orgy of democratic hypocrisy, no reference is made to the fact that the American military, in the course of its wars in the Middle East, is responsible for the deaths of at least 15 journalists. In the on-going narrative of “Freedom of Speech Under Attack,” there is no place for any mention of the 2003 air-to-surface missile attack on the offices of Al Jazeera in Baghdad that left three journalists dead and four wounded....................http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2015/01/09/pers-j09.html

    1. Russia likely to demand early repayment of Ukraine's $3 billion debt: RIA Novosti ...

(Reuters) - It is "highly likely" that Russia will demand early repayment of $3 billion in debt owed by Ukraine, Russia's RIA Novosti agency reported on Saturday, citing an anonymous government source.

The source told the agency that Ukraine was in violation of a "whole series" of conditions for Russia's loan.

"In these circumstances it is highly likely that Russia will be forced in the near future to demand from Ukraine the early repayment of the $3 billion debt," the source was quoted as saying.

The comments appear to contradict remarks in November by President Vladimir Putin, who told German media that Russia did not intend to demand early repayment of Ukraine's debt as this would cause a financial collapse.

The finance ministry did not answer calls for comment on Saturday...............http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/10/us-ukraine-crisis-russia-debt-idUSKBN0KJ06M20150110?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

At least 23 Kurdish soldiers have been killed and 12 others injured during clashes with Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fighters southeast of the city of Nineveh in Iraq's north, Al Jazeera has learnt.

The military forces of Iraqi Kurdistan, or Peshmerga, were targeted in two different vehicle explosions in areas around the Sinjar Mountains.

In a separate development, a Peshmerga spokesman told Al Jazeera that ISIL carried out the biggest attack yet on their positions near the strategic town Gwer about 60km from Erbil.

The spokesman said some of the ISIL fighters came to town in the early hours of Saturday by boat over the Tigris river before taking control of large parts of the town. No casualty figures have been reported.

The Pentagon said on Friday that ISIL is spending more effort defending key supply lines in Iraq due to coalition air strikes

  103. SpaceX launches cargo ship but rocket recovery test ends in crash ...

The American SpaceX firm says its experiment to bring part of its Falcon rocket down to a soft landing on a floating sea platform did not work.

The vehicle was launched on a mission to send a cargo capsule to the International Space Station.

But once the first-stage of the rocket completed its part of this task, it tried to make a controlled return.

The company CEO Elon Musk tweeted that the booster hit the platform hard.

"Close, but no cigar," he added. "Bodes well for the future tho'. Ship itself is fine. Some of the support equipment on the deck will need to be replaced." And he continued: "Didn't get good landing/impact video. Pitch dark and foggy. Will piece it together from telemetry and... actual pieces."

SpaceX intends to keep trying. If this kind of capability can be proven, it promises to dramatically lower launch costs in the future................http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-30752515

  105. Libya's factions have agreed to a new round of negotiations to attempt to end the North African country's crisis, the United Nations said on Saturday...

The meeting will take place next week at the United Nations office at Geneva, the U.N. mission for Libya said in a statement.

Libya, which is a major oil producer, has slipped deeper into division since the overthrow of Gaddafi, with two rival governments and two parliaments, each backed by competing groups of heavily armed former rebel fighters.

"In order to create a conducive environment for the dialogue, Special Representative Leon has proposed to the parties to the conflict a freeze in military operations for a few days," the U.N. said.............http://english.alarabiya.net/en/News/middle-east/2015/01/10/U-N-Libya-s-factions-agree-to-new-talks-in-Geneva-next-week-.html

  109. Allerta globale Usa sui viaggi all’estero...
