Egypt receives delayed Apache helicopter shipment from US

Egypt's armed forces received a shipment of 10 Apache helicopters from the US on Saturday, part of the US’s annual military aid to Egypt that had been delayed amid American concerns over Egypt’s political transition.

A military source told Al-Ahram's Arabic website the helicopters are being readied for operation in cooperation with US representatives.
Following the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013, the US announced it would freeze a part of its annual military aid, citing doubts over democratic reforms in the country.
  • Each year the US allocates around $1.5 billion in aid to Egypt, including $1.3 billion in military assistance.
  • Washington said in April that it planned to resume some of the annual aid for counterterrorism efforts in the Sinai Peninsula.

Secretary of State John Kerry confirmed to his Egyptian counterpart in August that the contracted attack helicopters would be delivered to Egypt.
