Severe form of bird flu reported in Netherlands

A highly contagious form of bird fly has been detected in the Dutch village of Hekendorp, in the province of Utrecht, the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs announced on Sunday.

The National Institute for Public Health and Environment (RIVM) confirmed to national broadcaster NOS that the bird flu variant is H5N8, a type which also occurred earlier this month in Germany.

The infection with highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza was found in a poultry farm. The type is very contagious among birds. For chickens, this version is deadly.

This type of bird flu can also spread to humans, but the effects are not serious. However, protective measures are adopted for people who may come into direct and close contact with infected poultry. Also, a temporary standstill of transport for poultry farms and mixed farms with poultry was proclaimed throughout the Netherlands.

The farm in Hekendorp is being cleared by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). It is a poultry farm with six stalls with a total of around 150,000 laying hens.

As of Sunday, at 11.30 a.m. a total ban was ordered on transporting poultry and other poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used bedding from poultry farms and mixed farms with poultry. This prohibition applies to a maximum of 72 hours, while the 16 poultry farms in a zone of 10 km around the company got a ban of 30 days.

  1. Britain finds bird flu on duck farm, not deadly H5N1 strain ..

A case of bird flu has been detected on a duck-breeding farm in northern England but it is not the deadly H5N1 strain, the government said on Monday, as officials began culling thousands of birds.

The announcement came a day after Dutch authorities said they had found the contagious H5N8 form of the disease at a poultry farm in the centre of the Netherlands, though it was not immediately clear if the cases were linked.

Britain's Chief Veterinary Officer Nigel Gibbens told BBC radio that while the strain in the north of England was a serious disease for poultry, the country's Public Health body did not believe it posed a risk to humans.

"We know it's an H5 strain but not N1 ... On the basis of what we know of the strain to date, Public Health England has said that this strain does not present a threat to public health." .........................http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/britain-finds-bird-flu-on-duck-farm-not-deadly-h5n1-strain.aspx?pageID=238&nID=74430&NewsCatID=345

  2. The European Commission is discussing protective measures to contain a "highly contagious" strain of bird flu discovered at a poultry farm in the Netherlands....

The measures will include killing all contaminated animals and the cleaning of their holding areas.

The Dutch government said the strain, H5N8, could potentially affect humans.

Authorities have already begun destroying 150,000 hens at the infected farm, in the village of Hekendorp.

"This highly pathogenic variant of avian influenza is very dangerous for bird life," the Dutch government said in a statement (in Dutch).

"The disease can be transmitted from animals to humans."

The Dutch economics ministry says humans can only be infected through very close contact with infected birds.........http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30076909
