Turkey not to normalize ties with Israel unless strikes on Gaza end (Recep Tayyip Erdogan)

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday said on Thursday it is impossible for his country to restore the strained bilateral ties with Israel unless the strikes on Gaza end, local Today's Zaman reported.

Earlier in the day, Erdogan made phone calls to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal as Israeli military continued with its offensive against Gaza targets.

He told the two that Turkey will stand in unity with the Palestinians against Israeli attacks, local media reported.
Erdogan also urged the international community to take actions to stop Israeli attacks, and provide humanitarian assistance for the Palestinians, according to the report.

  • Since Israeli campaign against Hamas began late Monday night, at least 88 Palestinians were killed and 660 injured, as well as more than 70 houses and around 15 governmental constructions in Gaza were destroyed, said Hamas officials.
Hamas armed wing al-Qassam Brigades claimed responsibility of launching dozens of long-range and medium range rockets into central and southern Israeli cities, towns and communities in response to the killing of Palestinian civilians.

  1. Turkish President Gül warns Israel against Gaza ground operation...

President Abdullah Gül has warned Israel not to carry out a ground assault on Gaza Strip, calling the country to stop its air strikes on civilians as political parties across the spectrum continue to react against the deadly raids.

In a written statement on July 11, President Gül said parties should return to the terms of cease-fire in 2012 and efforts should be exerted to resume peace talks in a way to render “indispensable rights to Palestinian people.” Later in the day, speaking to reporters after Friday prayers in Ankara, Gül warned Israel of “planting seeds of hate” if it continues the military operations.

“Israel, as though exploiting, is bombing Palestine from sea and land, destroying houses and killing innocent people in front of the world’s eyes,” President Gül said, labeling the acts of Israel as “dangerous.”

“I’d like to remind that these attacks [of Israel] will plant seeds of hate,” he stated.

The president called on the international community, primarily United Nations, for close cooperation and consultation, adding that the escalation of tensions could lead to “everlasting grand chaos.”

Separately, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) and presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtaş slammed the Israeli actions..................http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkish-president-gul-warns-israel-against-gaza-ground-operation.aspx?pageID=238&nID=68987&NewsCatID=510

  2. The U.S. State Department struck out at comments made earlier Friday by Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding Israel’s ongoing military incursion in the Gaza Strip....

Speaking after Friday prayers in Istanbul Erdogan said, “Israel has been terrorizing Gaza, and carrying out genocide. It does not want a national consensus government between Fatah and Hamas, and does not want to see a united Palestine."

“Certainly we believe his statements are offensive and wrong,” Jen Psaki, the State Department spokeswoman told reporters Friday. “Of course, this kind of provocative rhetoric is unhelpful and distracts from urgent efforts to bring about a ceasefire.”

The Turkish Premier also accused Friday what he said was an “alliance of crusaders,” for being behind the deaths of innocent Palestinians in Gaza during a speech at a political rally.

“That is not an effort the U.S. is undergoing,” said Psaki.

Israeli ground troops invaded Gaza late Thursday evening in the third major offensive in six years. The Palestinian death toll in the coastal Palestinian enclave has risen to 279.
