Η συνάντηση διάρκειας δύο ωρών μεταξύ του Αμερικανού Προέδρου Μπάρακ Ομπάμα και των Προέδρων του Ευρωπαϊκού Συμβουλίου Χέρμαν Βαν Ρόμπεϊ και της Κομισιόν, Ζοζέ Μανουέλ Μπαρόζο, χαρακτηρίστηκε από τις δύο πλευρές εξαιρετικά θετική με ταυτόσημες θέσεις σε όλα τα ζητήματα που συζητήθηκαν.
Αναφορικά με τη στάση έναντι της Ρωσίας, ο Μπαράκ Ομπάμα δήλωσε ότι επιβεβαιώθηκε ο άριστος συντονισμός μεταξύ των δύο πλευρών του Ατλαντικού. Τώρα συντονιζόμαστε, όπως είπε, για την επιβολή πρόσθετων κυρώσεων εάν η Ρωσία εμμείνει στην επιθετική της στάση έναντι της Ουκρανίας. Η Ρωσία έχει ακόμη περιθώρια αποκλιμάκωσης της κρίσης, αλλά εάν δεν το κάνει θα υπάρξουν νέες κυρώσεις και περισσότερη της απομόνωσης της Μόσχας, ανέφερε.
Για άριστο συντονισμό ΕΕ-ΗΠΑ μίλησε ο Χέρμαν Βαν Ρόμπεϊ, επιβεβαιώνοντας και ο ίδιος ότι οι δύο πλευρές εξετάζουν πρόσθετες κυρώσεις εάν η Ρωσία συνεχίσει την επιθετική στάση της και την παραβίαση του διεθνούς δικαίου, όπως έκανε με την προσάρτηση της Κριμαίας εδάφους ξένης χώρας.
Απεξάρτηση από τη Ρωσία με αμερικανικό σχιστολιθικό αέριο
Σχετικά με την ενεργειακή ασφάλεια της ΕΕ, ο Αμερικανός Πρόεδρος εμφανίστηκε κατ’ αρχήν θετικός στο αίτημα των Ευρωπαίων για διευκόλυνση των εισαγωγών σχιστολιθικού αερίου από τις ΗΠΑ στην Ευρώπη, στο πλαίσιο των προσπαθειών απεξάρτησης από τη Ρωσία. Την προσεχή βδομάδα θα υπάρξει συνάντηση του Αμερικανού Υπουργού Εξωτερικών Τζον Κέρι με την Ύπατη Εκπρόσωπο της ΕΕ για την εξωτερική πολιτική Κάθριν Άστον, όπου το θέμα θα συζητηθεί λεπτομερώς.
- Πάντως, ο κ. Ομπάμα κάλεσε τους Ευρωπαίους να αναλύσουν διεξοδικά το θέμα της ενεργειακής τους ασφάλειας καθορίζοντας το μείγμα των προμηθευτών και των πηγών ενέργειας, ενώ όπως είπε, οι ΗΠΑ θα συνδράμουν από την πλευρά τους αυτήν την προσπάθεια της ΕΕ με σχιστολιθικό αέριο.

- Remarks by President Barroso following the EU-US Summit
Press conference
Brussels, 26 March 2014
First of all, President Obama,
it's great to have you here in Brussels, the capital of Europe, in the
headquarters of the European institutions.
Your visit sends a very strong
signal. First of all to the European citizens, in the sense of how
important this transatlantic relationship is for Europe and for the
United States of America; to the American people – and I would like to
say to the American people that you can count on us as your best friends
and allies; and also to the rest of the world. We remain committed and
open. We are decided to engage in all global issues, from free trade to
achieving the millennium development goals and to climate action. But at
the same time we will also be firm in defending our common values:
values of peace, freedom, of the rights of the individual, the rule of
law, of international law.
The European Union and the
United States are working together to make sure that actions that are
unacceptable will bear serious consequences. And in fact we can say that
it is in this spirit that we have not only been working on issues like
Iran or the Middle East peace process, but most recently on the crisis
of Ukraine. We have discussed this again today, we are determined not
only to safeguard and to support the independence, the prosperity of
that country, but also to show that some kind of unacceptable behaviour
cannot continue.
We also discussed – linked to
this aspect, but not only linked to this issue – the importance of
energy, of energy security, at ministerial level. Our teams are going to
meet already next week to discuss some issues in terms of energy
cooperation between Europe and the United States.
A very concrete, probably the
most concrete example of the deepening of our relationship, is precisely
the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, not only because it
is the agreement that we are preparing for the most important economic
relationship in the world. Every day, there is trade of 2.2 billion
euros between the two sides of the Atlantic. It is not just because of
the huge dimension of this agreement, but because it will be an
agreement among equals. Not only are our economies equal in size, but
our societies are equal in values. And I believe that to both our
economies a new impulse of this Transatlantic Trade and Investment
Partnership, will be very important to give a decisive injection of
dynamism. And indeed even increase the potential for growth, not only
for big business, but also for small and medium-sized businesses, for
every household there are great potentials in terms of job creation on
both sides of the Atlantic, if we do it right. And today we have
confirmed that we are determined at the highest level to make it happen
and to make it a success, not only for us, but also for the global
economy.

Ukraine, Energy Highlight Obama EU Talks ....
ReplyDeleteBRUSSELS — President Obama continues his efforts to build support among European allies against Russia's takeover of the Crimea region of Ukraine. At an EU summit - his first in Brussels - the U.S. leader said the Ukraine crisis is highlighting the need for Europe to diversify its energy sources.
Obama’s trip to the heart of Europe comes at a crucial time, when the U.S. is leading efforts to isolate Russia in an attempt to prevent Russian forces from going deeper into Ukraine - or to other nations in the region.
Obama made it a point to show that U.S. ties to Europe run deep.
The president started his day in Belgium with a visit to Flanders Field outside Brussels and laid a wreath at a cemetery where more than 1,000 U.S. soldiers killed in World War One are buried.
It was on to a lunch meeting with European leaders that officials said was aimed at reaffirming the U.S.-European partnership.
They talked about tightening sanctions if Russia encroaches further into Ukraine or other neighbors and about Europe's dependence on Russian oil and gas.
At a joint news conference with European Council leaders, Obama said that dependence is a point of vulnerability that European leaders need to examine.
“Energy is obviously a central focus of our efforts and we have to consider very strongly. El presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, ha reclamado a los socios de la OTAN un mayor compromiso para garantizar su seguridad frente a las amenazas externas. "La situación en Ucrania nos recuerda que libertad no es gratis", ha advertido en la sede del Consejo Europeo durante su primera visita a las instituciones comunitarias.
"Tenemos que asegurarnos que tenemos auténticos planes de contingencia para todos los Estados miembros y debemos asegurar una mayor presencia en los países que son más vulnerables", ha dicho el líder estadounidense, preocupado porque algunos países han reducido sus presupuestos de Defensa. "Todo el mundo debe contribuir porque hay que costear el personal, los activos y los entrenamientos necesarios para tener una OTAN creíble".
Después de una reunión de apenas una hora y media con los presidentes del Consejo Europeo, Herman Van Rompuy, y de la Comisión, Jose Manuel Durão Barroso, el presidente de EEUU visitará el cuartel general de la OTAN y mantendrá un encuentro con su secretario general, Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
