Estonian foreign ministry has confirmed the recording of his
conversation with EU foreign policy chief is authentic. Urmas Paet said
that snipers who shot at protesters and police in Kiev were hired by
Maidan leaders.
Paet told RIA-Novosti news agency that he talked to Catherine Ashton last week right after retiring from Kiev, but refrained from further comments, saying that he has to “listen to the tape first.”
“It’s very disappointing that such surveillance took place altogether. It’s not a coincidence that this conversation was uploaded [to the web] today,” he stressed.
“My conversation with Ashton took place last week right after I returned from Kiev. At that time I was already in Estonia,” Paet added.
The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement on its website, saying that the recording of the leaked telephone conversation between Paet and Ashton is “authentic.”
The phone call took place on February 26 after Estonia’s FM returned from his visit to Ukraine, which took place soon after the end of street violence in Kiev, the ministry added.
“We reject the claim that Paet was giving an assessment of the opposition’s involvement in the violence," the statement stressed, adding that the FM was only providing an overview of what he had heard during his Kiev visit.
RT has contacted Ashton’s spokesperson, Maja Kocijancic, who said “we don’t comment on leaked phone conversations.”
The call took place after Estonia’s Foreign Minister Urmas Paet visited Kiev on February 25, following the peak of clashes between the pro-EU protesters and security forces in the Ukrainian capital.

It was reportedly uploaded to the web by officers of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) loyal to ousted President Viktor Yanukovich who hacked Paet’s and Ashton’s phones.
During the conversation, Paet stressed that “there is now stronger and stronger understanding that behind the snipers, it was not Yanukovich, but it was somebody from the new coalition.”
According to the Estonian FM, “all the evidence shows” that the “same snipers” at Maidan were shooting at people from both sides – the police and the protesters.
Ashton reacted to the information by saying: “Well, yeah…that’s, that’s terrible,” adding that the matter is worth investigating.
94 people were killed and another 900 injured during the standoff between police and protesters at Maidan Saquare in Kiev last month.

Estonia confirms authenticity of Paet-Ashton conversation on Kiev snipers...
ReplyDeleteThe Estonian Foreign Ministry has confirmed the authenticity of a telephone conversation posted on the Internet between Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet and EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs Catherine Ashton regarding the events in Ukraine, the press service of the Estonian Foreign Ministry reports.

"My conversation with Ashton took place last week directly after my visit to Ukraine. At that time, I was in Estonia already," he said.

UKRAINE / RUSSIA: Alleged Audiotape of EU High Representative Ashton Phone Call with Estonian Foreign Minister. -Jen Psaki, Spokesperson, Daily Press Briefing....
ReplyDeleteQUESTION: All right. And my last one on Ukraine is --
MS. PSAKI: Sure.
QUESTION: -- have you heard this latest audio tape of apparently bugged conversation between Catherine Ashton and the foreign minister?
MS. PSAKI: We have seen the reports of it, yes. And --
QUESTION: Have you listened to it?
MS. PSAKI: I have not had a chance to listen to it yet.
QUESTION: It’s very high quality. In stereo, too.
MS. PSAKI: Mm-hmm. As seems to be the theme.
QUESTION: Yeah. In that call, the foreign minister – and forgive me, what country is the foreign minister from?
QUESTION: Estonia.
QUESTION: Estonia. The Estonian foreign minister says something about suspicions that the snipers, the people who fired on protestors in the square, were not directed to do so by the then president, but rather by the protestors themselves. Do you have – do U.S. officials share this suspicion?
MS. PSAKI: Well, I know you’re asking about the content, which I don’t have anything for you on. But --
QUESTION: Right. Quite apart from it, it’s out there that a foreign minister of – a NATO member says that there are these suspicions. Do you share those suspicions?
MS. PSAKI: Well, not that I’m aware of, Matt. But broadly speaking in terms of this report, we don’t have any – we’ve seen the reports. We don’t have any confirmation of the validity of this call or confirmation that there wasn’t any doctoring of the call either. So it’s hard to speak to the content as it’s been reported.
QUESTION: Well, just about – how about – does the United States have any reason to believe that the people who were doing the shooting in Kyiv were not doing so under the orders of the president and, in fact, were doing so under orders of people affiliated, at least, with the opposition?
MS. PSAKI: I don’t – that’s not a discussion that I’m aware of internally here being had. But obviously, the context of where this information was reportedly coming from is important here too.
QUESTION: Okay. And then last thing: Do you have any comment in general on the release of such a phone call since – particularly since one of your own colleagues was victimized, if that’s the right word, in a very similar fashion on the same subject not so long ago?
MS. PSAKI: Mm-hmm. Well, Matt, obviously these reports just came out. But as I said around the last unfortunate case, this is just another example of the kind of Russian statecraft that we have strong concerns about. And we don’t, again, know the content. I can’t verify the content of the call, that the call hasn’t been doctored in any way. So we’ll see that report itself out and look for confirmation from individuals in the countries......................http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/dpb/2014/03/222962.htm#UKRAINE
