- Crimea’s Parliament Decides to Secede to Russia.
The parliament of Crimea, a majority ethnic Russian region within Ukraine, decided Thursday to secede from the country and become part of Russia.
A popular vote to approve that decision or restore the 1992 Crimean Constitution, whereby the peninsula would remain an autonomous republic within Ukraine, is scheduled for March 16, according to a statement posted on the legislature's website.
The ballot, to be printed in the Russian, Ukrainian and Tatar languages, will include only those two questions, according to the statement. Neither question would allow voters to indicate a preference for independence.
The referendum was originally scheduled to be held May 25, the same day as Ukraine’s early presidential election.
Rallies around the predominantly Russian-speaking peninsula following the formation of the new government in Kiev have openly called for secession and annexation by Russia.

Ukraine PM says military ‘ready to protect our country’...
ReplyDeleteUkraine’s interim prime minister on Thursday said the country’s armed forces would act if Russia’s military intervention escalated and slammed as “illegitimate” a decision to hold a referendum on whether the region should become part of Russia.
In a news conference in Brussels, Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said that any decree making Crimea part of Russia was an illegitimate move and that Crimea was and would remain an integral part of the country.
"This is an illegitimate decision and this so-called referendum has no legal grounds at all. That's the reason why we urge the Russian government not to support those who support separatism in the Ukraine," Yatseniuk said of the vote to be held on March 16th.
"Crimea is was and will be an integral part of Ukraine," he said, while urging Russia to withdraw its military from Crimea.
Yatseniuk added that Ukraine’s armed forces would act if Russian military intervention escalated any further in to Ukraine's territory.

ReplyDeletePresident Barack Obama said on Thursday that a proposed referendum in Crimea to join Russia would violate international law and said US sanctions were aimed at punishing Moscow for its intervention in Ukraine.
"The proposed referendum on the future of Crimea would violate the Ukrainian constitution and violate international law," Obama told reporters at the White House.
"Any discussion about the future of Ukraine must include the legitimate government of Ukraine," he said.

Crimea first deputy PM: Ukrainian state property in Crimea to be nationalized...
ReplyDeleteAll enterprises on Crimean territory that are Ukraine’s state property will be nationalized, Rustam Temirgaliyev, the first deputy prime minister of the autonomous republic, told a press conference on Thursday.
“All Ukrainian state enterprises will be nationalized to become property of the Crimean autonomous republic,” he said.
He noted that all the property of private businesses, including land, realty and enterprises, will be re-registered in accordance with Russian laws.
