UNITED NATIONS, March 04, /ITAR-TASS/. Russia has called a UN Security Council meeting in order to clarify in detail its position regarding the situation in Ukraine, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin told reporters on Monday, heading for the Council meeting.
“I will explain in detail the position of the Russian Federation on the current situation in Ukraine, as well as how the Russian policy in this sphere is being built,” he said.

The UN Security Council has already met twice last week in connection with the situation in Ukraine. On Friday, the Security Council members held a closed-door meeting, and on Saturday - open discussions. Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Yuri Sergeyev was invited to both meetings.

  •  Ukraine's deposed president Viktor Yanukovych has formally asked Moscow to deploy Russian troops to re-establish law and order in his country, Russia told the UN Security Council on Monday.

"Under the influence of Western countries, there are open acts of terror and violence," Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin quoted the letter from Yanukovich to Putin in an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

"People are being persecuted for language and political reasons," he quoted the letter as saying. "So in this regard I would call on the President of Russia, Mr. Putin, asking him to use the armed forces of the Russian Federation to establish legitimacy, peace, law and order, stability and defending the people of Ukraine."............................http://www.ellanodikis.net/2014/03/yanukovych-asked-putin-for-troops-in.html

(Belga)

  3. Churkin: Russia is afraid that deployment of OSCE observers in Ukraine might take months...

Russia admits the possibility of sending observers of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to Ukraine, but is afraid that this process might take a long time, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said at the UN Security Council on Monday.

“We do not deny that these institutions may be involved,” the diplomat stressed, speaking about the possibility of sending an international mission to Ukraine. However, he warned that “months will pass as they observe or prepare to observe.” “God knows what may happen there during this time,” said the RF official.

The sending to Ukraine of OSCE observers, as well as a mediation mission for the crisis resolution, has been supported, in particular, by the United States.
