Moscow is ready to support not the government of Ukraine, but the
Ukrainian people, President Putin said, referring to Russia’s loan to
its neighboring state and its offer to reduce gas prices.
No matter which government comes to power in Ukraine, Russia will not reconsider its earlier signed agreements, he told a news conference in Brussels.
"Regarding you question whether we will review our agreements on loans and the energy sector if the opposition will take power ... No, we will not," Putin told a news conference after talks with European Union leaders in Brussels.

If new Ukrainian govt revises agenda, Russia may revise agreements with Kyiv - Shuvalov ...
ReplyDeleteIf a new Ukrainian government announces a different agenda and different priorities, this could theoretically serve as grounds for Moscow to revise the existing agreements with Kyiv, but this possibility is not under consideration now, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov said.
"If the Ukrainian government, whatever it is after its formation, announces a different agenda and different priorities, then this would probably be grounds for us to revise the agreements. But it is important for us to comply with all of our commitments within the boundaries of the existing agreements," Shuvalov told journalists following an EU-Russia summit on Tuesday.

Vladimir Putin tells Brussels to stay out of Ukraine's political crisis...
ReplyDeleteRussian president dismisses EU decision to send envoy to Kiev: 'The more intermediaries there are, the more problems there are'
President Vladmir Putin warned Europe to keep its hands off Ukraine on Tuesday, as Brussels sent its top foreign policy envoy to Kiev to try to mediate in the 10-week stand-off between President Viktor Yanukovych and the opposition on the streets.
Russia's intervention in Brussels followed Yanukovych's biggest concession to the opposition, the sacking of his hardline prime minister and government and a promise to repeal draconian laws criminalising protest and freedom of speech.
Putin met EU leaders for the first time since November's clash between the Kremlin and Europe over the future of Ukraine triggered the crisis in Kiev. Catherine Ashton, the EU foreign policy chief, took part in the meetings with Putin in Brussels then travelled to Kiev to try to mediate between the opposing sides.
"The more intermediaries there are, the more problems there are," Putin said. "I am not sure Ukraine needs intermediaries." He pointedly noted that European leaders would complain if Russia sent envoys to mediate in the Greek crisis of the past four years..............http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jan/28/vladimir-putin-ukraine-crisis-eu

Ukraine expects $2 billion tranche of Russian aid soon: acting PM...
ReplyDelete(Reuters) - Ukraine's interim prime minister pledged on Wednesday to work to limit damage to the economy from more than two months of turmoil and said he expected Russia to disburse a further $2 billion of aid "very soon".
The former Soviet republic has been gripped by mass street unrest since President Viktor Yanukovich walked away from a trade pact with the European Union last November, opting for closer economic ties with Russia which has brought it a $15 billion bailout package.
With Yanukovich and loyalist deputies in parliament now making concessions to defuse the crisis and with the resignation of Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, there had been speculation that Russia might slow or even halt the stream of aid.
But, following a pledge on Tuesday by Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow would honor its promise to extend $15 billion in credits and cheaper gas, Ukraine's acting prime minister Serhiy Arbuzov expressed confidence a second tranche of $2 billion would be released soon.
"We have already received the first tranche of $3 billion and expect to receive the second tranche of $2 billion very soon," said Arbuzov, chairing his first cabinet meeting as interim premier. The Russian credits are coming on stream via Ukrainian government-issued bonds...............http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/01/29/us-ukraine-arbuzov-idUSBREA0S0HI20140129?feedType=RSS&feedName=worldNews

Russia to Wait for New Ukrainian Govt Before Releasing More Aid....
ReplyDeleteKIEV, January 29 (RIA Novosti) – Russia warned Ukraine on Wednesday that it will halt the implementation of a financial aid package until the crisis-hit former Soviet nation has formed a new government.
Financial and energy agreements with Ukraine will only be honored when “we understand what sort of government there will be, who will be working in it and what rules they will stick to,” Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told the Cabinet on Wednesday, Prime business news agency reported.
“That’s sensible, let’s wait for the new Ukrainian government to be formed,” responded President Vladimir Putin, who was also present at the meeting, Prime reported.
Russia agreed to supply Ukraine with $15 billion worth of loans and slash the price for gas in a December deal that was widely seen as a political reward for Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych after his decision to back off from integration plans with Europe and cement closer ties with Russia..................http://en.ria.ru/russia/20140129/187025942/Russia-to-Wait-for-New-Ukrainian-Govt-Before-Releasing-More-Aid.html
